Poverty Race Class & Culture is a practitioner training designed to unpack how misperceptions about race, class and culture work to perpetuate poverty in America. It focuses on equipping organization working in to address poverty to develop programming that overcomes those misperceptions and work to interrupt the cycle of poverty.

Options to consider:

Poverty, Race, Class & Culture

This (5) week class will discuss how misperceptions about poverty, race, class, and culture work to perpetuate the cycle of poverty in America; and what practitioners can do to help interrupt that cycle. The class concludes with personal, organizational, and programmatic strategies to help interrupt that cycle and overcome the effects of poverty on all people in American society.

Class Format: *Pre-Class Preparation, Lecture, Discussion, Reading ,Small Group Learning Activities, and Homework (est. class time 14 hours, including homework)

 

Learning Framework: People change and grow by answering (5) questions and each class focuses on answering those questions:
 

Week 1 - What is the Problem?
Week 2 - Why is it a Problem?  
Week 3 - Why is it my Problem?  
Week 4 - What can I do about it?
Week 5 - How do I get started? 

*Pre-Class Preparation Homework 
Because people are at various places in their understanding of poverty, Pre-Class Preparation will help prepare participants for a productive and thought-provoking learning experience. It introduces class learning objectives, clarifies key terms and definitions and provides learning activities to help unpack those terms and definitions. Participants will also be able to reflect on their personal history and define their own learning objectives for the class.
